Kuwait insurance regulator discusses data link with agency on illegal residents' records

Kuwait's Insurance Regulatory Unit met the Central Agency for Remedying the Status of Illegal Residents to discuss updating those residents' records in the regulator's systems and building an electronic data link between the two bodies. The regulator gave no timetable. The meeting follows a week in which the regulator referred three brokerages to prosecutors.

Kuwait's Insurance Regulatory Unit (IRU) held a coordination meeting with the Central Agency for Remedying the Status of Illegal Residents, the regulator said on 15 October. The two bodies discussed how to organise and update the records of illegal residents held in the IRU's approved systems. They also discussed an electronic link to exchange data and information between them.

IRU head Mohammed Sulaiman Al-Otaibi and acting deputy head Abdullah Zayed Al-Fahad led the regulator's side. The Central Agency was represented by its acting secretary-general, Brigadier Dr Sharif Ali Al-Kandari, and two assistant secretaries-general. The IRU said the aim is more accurate and reliable data, better integration of systems and better services, in line with the government's digital transformation programme.

The statement does not give a timetable. It does not name the insurance products affected or say whether insurers must change how they record these customers.

The meeting is the latest in a series of IRU actions. On 7 October the regulator met the Ministry of Interior to discuss compliance with insurance rules and joint inspection campaigns. On 14 October it said it had referred three insurance brokerages to the public prosecutor and had warned four insurers.

EU expert opinion proposes extra solvency tests for insurers that back bank risk transfers

An expert opinion prepared for the European Commission proposes extra solvency criteria for insurers that give unfunded protection in banks' significant risk transfers, Bloomberg reported. Each deal would need at least two protection providers and a clause to replace a downgraded insurer. EIOPA and the ESRB would assess concentration risk at insurers.
