GFS Pride sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran's mine claim goes unverified

The Singapore-flagged container ship GFS Pride caught fire and sank in the Strait of Hormuz after a projectile strike, and all 21 crew were evacuated, The National reported. A sister ship, GFS Giselle, was damaged in the same attacks, and Iran's claim that a mine sank the vessel has no independent support.

The container ship GFS Pride, which could carry 2,824 standard containers, caught fire and sank in the Strait of Hormuz after it was hit by an unidentified projectile, The National reported. Singapore's maritime authority said all 21 crew were evacuated safely. The sister ship GFS Giselle was damaged in the same wave of attacks but reached anchorage. Singapore called the strikes a breach of international law.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the ship struck a naval mine on an "unauthorised" route and carried alleged contraband. The newspaper said these claims could not be verified, and the maritime security firm Marisks found no independent evidence of a mine. How much cargo was on board is unclear because no manifest was published. Unverified posts on X showed small boats collecting floating cargo.

The National also cited a Reuters report that Tehran is changing its tactics against shipping, with one Iranian official warning that such vessels would be safe nowhere.
