A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said the UAE is now turning to its east coast, which faces the Gulf of Oman, instead of relying on the Strait of Hormuz, Khaleej Times reported. The change comes after Iran targeted oil tankers in the narrow waterway.
Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister for Energy and Sustainability, told the newspaper that the east coast is operational and that the country is already shipping from there. He described the UAE as one of the main contributors to an intra-Gulf energy network and pointed to its diversified energy mix, including the Barakah nuclear plant, which has 5.6 gigawatts of combined capacity and supplies about a quarter of the country's electricity.
Balalaa also said the UAE will host a UN water conference in Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10.
