Liberty Mutual Insurance has agreed to buy Austral Seguradora, a specialty insurer headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Reinsurance News reported on 15 October 2026. The publication describes Austral as a top-five surety provider in Brazil. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals, and the parties did not disclose the price.

Austral has written business in Brazil since 2010 as part of the Austral Holding Group. The acquisition includes its surety, financial lines and casualty portfolios. Liberty Mutual says it will keep the portfolio without disruption to business or brokers, and about 100 Austral employees will join Liberty when the deal closes. Liberty expects to become one of the largest surety providers in Brazil after completion.

Nate Zangerle, president of Global Surety at Liberty Mutual, said the purchase supports the aim of being one of the leading guarantee providers in Brazil, and pointed to Austral's broker relationships and technology-enabled underwriting. Manuel Moreno, who leads Latin America and US underwriting at Liberty Specialty Markets, called Brazil “one of the most important insurance markets in Latin America”.

Insurance Business reported that the deal continues a surety-led strategy in the region. In 2023 Liberty sold its retail and specialty direct business in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador to Talanx for about €1.38bn but kept its surety operations. The publication linked demand for Brazilian surety to the 2021 public procurement law, which widened mandatory bonding for public works contracts.
